Investigators in Connecticut are researching three or more cases of convicted sex offenders who registered on Facebook, a popular social networking website, the New York Times reported, Monday.

State investigators “found inappropriate content and images” on the service. The investigation is ongoing and officials have requested Facebook remove the profiles.

The attorney’s general office and Representatives from Facebook were not available for comment.

In an interesting twist the federal agency charged with protecting consumers from internet scams, now finds themselves wrapped up in one.

Identity thieves have been sending thousands of scam e-mails acting as the Federal Trade Commission - the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department - attempting to trick consumers into parting with their personal financial information.

These agencies are the lastest in a long list of institutions to be exploited in “phishing” scams…

Big names in business such as Yahoo Inc., Dell Inc., and Marriott International are lobbying Congress for stricter laws targeting online scammers who are profiting off their brand names.

As a team united as the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse, ten companies have hired a lawyer to encourage federal lawmakers to crack down against those who claim web addresses or domain names that include - or resemble - company trademarks.

The coalition estimates that so-called cybersquatting costs companies worldwide more than $1 billion annually in diverted customer sales and enforcement expenses.

Dealing with computer crimes and annoyances has become significantly more important to the Federal Trade Commission’s work over the past couple years. This past year, the Federal Trade Commission announced settlements with spammers, adware distributors and with Sony over distribution of rootkit software.

The FTC Chairman recently participated in a discussion with IDG News Service to talk about some of the work her organization has been providing to keep criminals and spammers at bay. She also discussed the Sony settlement and the role online advertisers pay in the spyware and adware plague and whether or not disclosures in licensing agreements really do count.
